🍀 Why we celebrate St. Patrick’s Day?🍀
There are at least three historical and cultural factors that support the widespread celebration of St. Patrick’s Day in Scotland.
Strong Historical Links Between Ireland and Scotland
The earliest connections between Ireland and Scotland developed over thousands of years ago. Scotland’s Gaelic cultural roots originated from Ireland. The Kingdom of Dál Riata was founded during the 6th century on the west coast of Scotland and northeast Ireland, so because of this Gaelic heritage there were many commonalities, including traditions, music, languages and ways of celebration, that are still evident today in each country.
Large Irish Community in Scotland
Additionally, Scotland has a large number of people who claim Irish ancestry, and many of those ancestors emigrated to Scotland during the 18th and especially the 19th century to find employment, largely in cities such as:
- Glasgow
- Edinburgh
- Dundee
Glasgow may be referred to as having one of the largest numbers of people of Irish ancestry living outside of Ireland. Therefore, the Irish traditions of celebrating St. Patrick’s Day became a part of Scotland’s local celebrations.
Shared Celtic Culture
Both Ireland and Scotland are part of the Celtic cultural world, which includes other Celtic countries, including:
- Wales
- Cornwall
- Brittany
- Isle of Man
In addition to similar folkloric traditions, music, mythologies and traditions, they share a similar Celtic heritage. Therefore, celebrating St. Patrick’s Day in Scotland could be viewed as less of an adoption of an alien tradition and more of an extension of their shared Celtic heritage.
Modern Celebrations
Currently, the celebration of St. Patrick’s Day in Scotland is mainly a social and cultural event. People in Scotland celebrate by listening to Irish music, wearing green clothing, attending theme-based events, and visiting pubs with friends. Many cities in Scotland, specifically Glasgow and Edinburgh, host Irish-themed concerts, festivals and cultural events around the time of St. Patrick’s Day.
Although St. Patrick’s Day is not officially recognized as a public holiday in Scotland, the celebrations reflect the historical and cultural bonds between the two neighboring Celtic nations.
