Running a cannabis website is not always as simple as putting products online and waiting for orders to come in. Cannabis platforms often operate in a space that attracts more unwanted attention than a regular online shop. Alongside genuine customers, websites can face automated bots, repeated traffic spikes, scraping activity, fake requests, and, in more serious cases, DDoS attacks designed to overload the platform. Weed Wonderland has dealt with this pressure more than once. We believe it is better to be honest about that than pretend websites never have problems. The important part is not whether an attack happens. The important part is how quickly you react, how well you protect customers, and whether people can still reach you when something goes wrong.

What Is a DDoS Attack?

A DDoS (Distributed Denial of Service) is an Internet based attack in which a single Website is flooded with a large number of Automated Traffic Requests at the same time. These are NOT Real Customers looking for products, price comparison, or placing normal orders. These are simply Automated Traffic Requests being sent over and over again as an attempt to put “pressure” on the Website and the Systems behind it. Think of this as if there were Hundreds or Thousands of “Fake Visitors” all trying to get into your building by entering through the front door at the same time. When the pressure becomes strong enough, a website may:

load more slowly than usual
struggle to open certain pages
delay checkout
take longer to generate payment links
temporarily block some visitors
become unavailable for a short period

That does not always mean the website has been “hacked” or that customer information has been accessed. In many cases, the goal is simply to overwhelm the service and make it harder for genuine people to use it.

Why Are Cannabis Websites Targeted?

There is no single reason, but cannabis websites can attract more hostile or automated traffic than many standard online shops.

The Industry Gets a Lot of Attention

Cannabis is a high-interest market. Popular websites attract customers, competitors, bots, scrapers, and people trying to disrupt services. The more active a platform becomes, the more likely it is to attract automated traffic that has nothing to do with normal shopping.

Any online store depends on smooth access, checkout, and payment. Attackers do not always need to take a website completely offline to create problems. The reason this becomes so difficult is because of how VPN’s allow many valid customers to appear as if they are accessing your site from a different server than what they actually are. From a security perspective, some of this traffic may appear to be malicious (even though it really isn’t) simply because there is no other way for the security to know that it is coming from a legitimate customer. Therefore, aggressively blocking all traffic is also not going to be a good long-term solution.

What Happened to Weed Wonderland?

Over the past year, Weed Wonderland has faced repeated waves of bot activity. During stronger periods, automated traffic created pressure on access, page loading, checkout, and payment systems. To protect the platform, stricter access controls were introduced. They helped reduce unwanted traffic, but there was a side effect: some genuine customers using VPNs had difficulty opening the website. We knew that needed to be improved. So instead of leaving the system as it was, we adjusted the way access rules work and reviewed how VPN traffic is handled. The goal was simple: keep strong protection in place while allowing more genuine customers to reach the website normally.

What We Have Changed

We have already made several important changes to improve stability and reduce unnecessary access problems.

CAPTCHA Protection

You may have noticed that recently, when visiting our site or checking out, you are sometimes asked to confirm that you are “not a robot.” That is part of our CAPTCHA protection. It helps filter automated traffic before it can place additional pressure on the website. For a genuine customer, it may mean one quick extra step. For bots trying to flood the system automatically, it creates another barrier.

Better Access for VPN Users

The challenge is to avoid treating every VPN connection as suspicious while still protecting the website against harmful automated traffic. We have improved that balance and continue to adjust it when needed.

Ongoing Monitoring and Adjustments

DDoS protection is not something you set once and forget about. Attack patterns change. Traffic changes. Bots change the way they behave. Because of that, we continue to review how the website reacts during periods of high pressure and make changes when we see that real customers are being affected.

Can the Website Still Slow Down?

Yes, on occasion. It’s better for us to say it as well. The situation is much more solid than in the past, however; we will often have to work under a lot of pressure. Sometimes an additional wave of automatic traffic can slow down the site temporarily. You might see some things when this happens:

it could take a little longer for pages to load;
the checkout process could move slower;
a link to pay (payment) could take a few seconds to appear;
you may get denied access temporarily;
if you are asked to complete a CAPTCHA challenge before proceeding.

All of these happen rarely. A short wait does not indicate that your purchase has been deleted nor is anyone unattended.

What Happens If Your Payment Link Is Delayed?

When there are a large number of requests to your website, generating a payment link takes some time and, therefore, the link does not always appear immediately when it is generated. The system needs additional time to successfully complete this request. Where possible, the payment link will be delivered to you once available. This generally happens in approximately 5-10 minutes. We understand that waiting for the payment link is not ideal, however, we prefer to ensure safe processing of all your requests than push the system under high load.
