It’s Not Just the Strength – The Decline of Hash and Rise of Skunk
If you asked someone who smoked cannabis regularly in the U.K. during the late 1980s and 1990s how they compare modern cannabis to what they used back then, many would respond with something akin to “It’s strong, yes, but it’s not the same.” That is true. More importantly, that response is also not just nostalgia.
The transition from primarily hash-based U.K. cannabis culture to a predominantly skunk-based high potency cannabis culture is probably the largest unspoken transformation regarding how Britain consumes cannabis. Potency increased. There is no question of that. However, another element of the cannabis landscape has evolved. This element is difficult to measure and even more relevant to understanding cannabis than THC percentages.
Hash Culture
Traditionally, old school hash (the type that dominated the U.K. marketplace from the 1960s until approximately the early 2000s) was essentially imported. Morocco pollen hash, Lebanon Red, Afghanistan Black were some examples of the diverse types of hash available. Each of these had its unique characteristics, including color, texture, flavor and effect profiles based on origin and preparation methods. A characteristic of traditional hash often overlooked in today’s discussions surrounding cannabis is its cannabinoid ratio. In addition to containing THC, hash generally contains considerable amounts of CBD (cannabidiol), which is the non-psychotropic component that modulates and dampens the psychoactive impact of high dose THC. CBD functions somewhat as a brake when consuming large doses of THC, helping to prevent heightened states of anxiety. The high associated with traditional hash tends to be social, functional, rounder. People could consume it with friends, carry on a conversation and proceed with their day at a slower pace versus coming to a complete halt. Additionally, since hash contains the full terpene profile of the plant that it was derived from, hash provides a more complete and authentic representation of both the medicinal and recreational qualities associated with cannabis. Even the smell – that distinct spicy-resinous-warmth is part of the experience. Rolling a piece of Moroccan in your hand while observing it soften under heat is nearly a sensory memory for a majority of British cannabis users. The Changes Brought On By Skunk
High-potency cannabis – which is typically referred to as skunk regardless of actual strain – developed through intense selection pressure applied solely towards increasing THC concentration. Street strains now commonly test upwards of 20% to 25%. That represents a truly remarkable increase in potency relative to cannabis from three decades prior. In essence, CBD was bred out of high-THC varieties selected specifically for maximum psychoactivity. The moderating influence provided by CBD is absent. Thus, users are left with a far more potent, unpredictable and uncomfortable experience – an experience that does not sit well with users prone to anxiety and creates a distinctly different type of high. That statement is not speculative nor moralizing against cannabis use. Research on THC/CBD ratios and their association with anxiety and psychosis risk are relatively well-established. Cannabis that contain high concentrations of THC and minimal concentrations of CBD create greater propensity for acute anxiety, paranoia and potentially more severe psychological effects in susceptible populations. The potency driven competition that created today’s street skunk was not a health centered effort — it was a market driven effort.Beyond Biochemical Factors – Cultural & Experiential Differences Between Hash & Skunk
There exists another aspect to the differences between hash and skunk – aspects relating to culture and experience. Hash culture was characterized in certain ways. For example, sharing a joint of Moroccan hash over an extended period of time represented a different cadence – more conversational, less likely to render everyone silent. Hash encouraged engagement rather than withdrawal. On the contrary, high-potency skunk – particularly in inexperienced users or those with pre-existing anxious tendencies – can result in the opposite reaction. Couch lock, racing thoughts, an acute awareness that you are extremely high and don’t feel entirely comfortable – these reactions are not universally experienced; however, they are common enough to illustrate a definite shift in the nature of participating in U.K. cannabis culture. The Shift to Balanced Products
Interestingly, it appears as though the marketplace is correcting course. The recent proliferation of interest in balanced THC-CBD products combined with an expanding array of low-potency options coupled with the medicinal cannabis sector’s focus on cannabinoid ratios demonstrate that consumers are becoming increasingly aware that there is more to consider than simply maximizing THC. Hash is currently undergoing a quiet renaissance – craft-produced rosin, ice water hash and solventless extracts are gaining traction amongst consumers seeking to recapture the rounded experience provided by traditional hash — not merely as a blunt instrument for getting intoxicated. Strength matters. We’re certainly not going to argue against that. However, strength represents one factor within an equation that includes many others. The UK cannabis conversation is gradually recognizing this reality – albeit quietly after so many years. Weed Wonderland UK has always maintained that quality of cannabis products is defined by far more than strength alone. Quality means using the whole plant and providing the user with an authentic experience – not merely as a source of intoxication.
