How to Store Your THC Products in Hot Weather
Summer has arrived at last – time to apply some sunscreen, grab an ice-cold drink and fire-up the BBQ. But if you’re a THC user, summer means something else as well. There’s one thing you might want to consider before heading off into the sunshine – how to store your CBD products.
Hot weather can affect the quality of a variety of THC products including THC gummies, capsules, creams and other cannabis-based products. Hot weather won’t destroy your product instantly, however prolonged exposure to high-temperature conditions may alter the texture, flavour and quality of your THC products.
Why does heat matter for THC products?
Most THC products are created using plant extracts (cannabis), carrier oils and natural flavorings. Plant extracts, carrier oils and natural flavorings can degrade rapidly due to elevated temperatures. For example, if you were to leave a bottle of THC oil in full-sunlight for extended periods; the oil could thin out, have a completely new taste or have less potency than when it was first purchased.
Similarly, THC gummies and edible products may soften or “melt” together due to heat. The same issues may arise with THC cream and balm products. When exposed to extreme heat, these products may separate or turn runny.
As such, storing THC products in the right manner is crucial throughout the summer months.
Where to Store THC Oil
In order to maintain optimal quality of your THC oil, it should be stored in a cool location away from sunlight. This would typically include areas within your home that receive no direct sunlight such as a cupboard or closet in your bedroom. Always ensure that your bottle remains sealed after each use to prevent air from entering the container which could cause degradation. Never leave a bottle of THC oil in proximity to a heating element (e.g., radiator) or directly above a window sill or oven.
It is generally unnecessary to refrigerate THC oil. Room temperature (approximately 20°C/68°F) is sufficient for most products. However, if you live in a hot climate, placing your THC oil in the refrigerator is a viable option. Before consuming your product, allow it to reach room temperature prior to consumption to restore its normal consistency.
Storing THC Gummies & Edible Products
Gummies require additional precautions during the summer months since they may soften/melt together. Store them in their original packaging and seal the package immediately after opening. Place them in a cool area or cupboard if possible. During extreme heat, refrigeration can help preserve their texture/firmness.
THC edibles must be kept safely out-of-reach of young children/pets. Clearly label them, store them independently from regular sweets/snacks.
Traveling With CBD During Summer Months
During summer excursions, refrain from storing THC products in your vehicle. Vehicles can rapidly become extremely hot, regardless of external temperature readings. Pack your THC products (oil/gummies/capsules etc.) in small ziplock bags or pouches and store them in shaded areas whenever feasible.
On longer trips, store THC products in their original containers/labeled containers. Storing items in this fashion serves multiple purposes – protecting against damage while ensuring clarity.
Some Quick Tips For Storing Your THC Products This Summer:
