Cannabis Sativa: Uses, Benefits, and Why It’s More Versatile Than You Think
The cannabis sativa plant has been used by people for thousands of years and hundreds of different ways – medicine, industry, food, and for fun. understanding the whole picture will allow you to appreciate just how amazing this plant really is.
A Little History
One of the earliest cultivated plants on earth, cannabis sativa has been in use for over 10,000 years in china, first for its fibers and as a source of food, and then as medicine. it traveled through central asia and the middle east to europe and north america via trade routes and migrations of people. It loves warmer weather, grows quickly (and tall), and creates all sorts of wonderful compounds and materials. the selective breeding of varieties has created many differences throughout the world. some varieties have very little thc while others have lots – and many, many things in between. however, every single one of these varieties is genetically the same species.Recreation/Psychoactive
Most people associate cannabis sativa with recreation. because of its generally energetic and ‘uplifting’ nature, sativa-dominant strains are best suited to daylight hours, social events and creative pursuits. writers, musicians and artists report that cannabis allows them to access a more fluid way of thinking — less linearly, more associatively, more willing to make new connections. As with all cannabis strains, it is becoming apparent that there are fewer distinctions between sativa and indica strains. modern cannabis genetics include hybrids of sativas and indicas, and many researchers believe that the terms sativa and indica should be thought of as more descriptive of the psychoactive profile of a strain rather than a specific botany. so if your local dispensary says that a particular product is sativa dominant, you can get a pretty good sense of the type of experience you’ll have.Medical
Cannabis sativa has had a valid medical role for literally thousands of years. in addition to providing relief from physical pain, it has also provided relief from emotional distress. modern scientific research is rapidly catching up with what ancient healers knew about the therapeutic uses of cannabis.- Anxiety/mood issues. Certain strains of cannabis sativa — especially those with more cbd than thc — have shown great potential for helping alleviate anxiety and depression. it’s obvious why recreational users would want to enhance their moods; the benefits are equally evident when applied therapeutically.
- Chronic fatigue syndrome. Since sativa strains produce an energy-inducing effect and induce alertness — unlike the sedating effects produced by some indica strains — sativa is helpful to individuals who suffer from chronic fatigue. rather than the sedation produced by some indica strains, sativa may provide individuals suffering from chronic fatigue with the energy they need to engage in daily activities without producing the adverse effects associated with stimulants.
- Adhd. Although there isn’t much formal clinical research on using cannabis for adhd, a large number of individuals who suffer from adhd report that consuming a sativa-dominant form of cannabis increases their ability to focus and decrease their symptoms compared to other prescribed treatments.
- Nausea/appetite. One of the most scientifically-supported applications of cannabis is in reducing nausea in chemotherapy patients and increasing appetite in patients experiencing wasting diseases.
- Pain control. While many prefer to use indica strains to treat pain because of their relaxing body-effect, sativa strains with balanced cannabinoid levels can be beneficial for treating certain types of pain (especially neuropathic) without producing excessive sedation which hinders daily activity.
Hemp/Industrial Applications
This is where the story becomes quite astonishing. industrial hemp a form of cannabis sativa selectively bred for lower thc levels is probably one of the most flexible raw materials available to contemporary industry.- Textiles/fiber. hemp fiber is significantly stronger than cotton, and requires much less water to cultivate; further, hemp doesn’t require nearly as many pesticides as conventional cotton. several prominent clothing companies currently offer hemp-based fabrics in their lines.
- Building materials. hempcrete – a combination of hemp hurd (shredded stalks), lime, and water – is an increasingly popular green building material. it is lighter-than-concrete, breathable, carbon-neutral and serves as a superior insulator. it won’t replace concrete completely, but it could certainly serve as an attractive alternative in certain cases.
- Nutrition. hemp seeds are packed with nutrients including proteins (complete!), essential fatty acids (omega-3 & omega-6), and numerous vitamins/minerals. hemp seed oil is widely available in health-food stores as both a dietary supplement and cosmetic ingredient. in uk supermarkets, you’ll find hemp protein powder, hemp milk, hemp granola … and dozens more products made from hemp.
- Paper. hemp generates significantly more usable cellulose fiber per acre than trees do; additionally, it matures within months versus decades like trees. historical hemp paper is being rediscovered today as consumers increasingly seek out environmentally-friendly substitutes for tree-pulp paper.
- Biofuels/plastics. hemp can also be converted into biodiesel fuel — another area of ongoing research and development — as well as a feedstock for bioplastics.
CBD Products
The explosion of interest in CBD products over the past few years is largely thanks to cannabis sativa. CBD (cannabidiol) is primarily derived from hemp varieties of cannabis sativa and sold lawfully throughout the uk in oils, capsules, topical creams/gels etc., edibles etc.. Although preliminary research indicates great promise for CBD treatment against such afflictions as epilepsy, anxiety/inflammation/sleep disorders etc.. pharma-grade CBD has already been granted regulatory approval in the uk for the treatment of a rare form of childhood epilepsy called dravet syndrome. that is not alternative medicine; that is a fully-approved-by-mhra prescription medication! The Big Picture
There is obviously much more to cannabis sativa than simply getting “high.” for thousands of years, this plant has helped clothe us, house us, heal us and alter our perception – in short, help us survive. that we were forced to restrict knowledge about it during much of the 20th-century appears absurd given what we know now about how wonderfully versatile this plant is. Whether you’re looking at recreational consumption of cannabis, or potential medicinal or industrial applications, sativa products invites exploration and offers endless surprises upon discovery.
