It made the traditional way by harvesting trichomes – resin glands where cannabinoids and terpenes are contained in the plant – through mechanical separation methods that compress trichomes in a solid form. Hash today can be made in a variety of methods, such as ice-water (bubble hash) extraction methods, or heat and pressure methods (rosin). Wax are relatively new from modern extraction technology, but typically made with hydrocarbon solvents like either butane or propane. The solvent approaches strip the cannabinoids and terpenes from the plant via chemical means and then the solvents can be purged to provide a concentrated product with a unique consistency and typically a waxy texture. The term “wax” generically encompasses a number of textures; budder, crumble, or honeycomb are just a few and the specific production parameters can lead to cannabis waxes with many different textures. ## **Is wax more potent?** Typically, wax is more concentrated, with higher raw potency, than traditional hash. Traditional hash usually tests anywhere from 30% THC (higher quality) and up to 60% THC (very high quality), but modern cannabis wax preparations typically tests at 60-90% THC content, or more!  Full-spectrum hash usually has a bigger terpene spectrum and more cannabinoids, producing increased entourage effects. Premium hash products (like ice water hash) can get to THC levels similar to bad wax products, and they provide a better compound palette and potentially increased therapeutic benefits. ## **Production Procedures, and Strength Factors** Production processes influence the strength of concentrates. For example, using butane as a solvent for wax extraction allows for a more targeted extraction of plant compounds, and results in product that has overwhelming cannabinoid levels but has sacrificed some terpenes and minor cannabinoids unless it has been formulated to retain these compounds. While the procedures to create the hash relate to the reason the products will have different strength levels, hand-rolled or dry-sift hash will typically have lower concentrations than the modern bubble hash, which washes the trichome heads off the plant using ice water extraction with as few plant compounds as possible. The cleaner grades of bubble hash (full melt or six-star) can have a purer potency than wax, but offer greater terpenes as well. ## **User experience, or effective strength** The percentage of cannabinoids impacts the subjective experience of strength, but the timing of delivery method impact strength, too. For example, wax products will vaperize at a lower temperature than hash, providing more potency when dabbed because it lowers the time between inhalation and onset of effects. This speed of onset results in a greater experience of strength even if two products have equal THC. Hash tends to have a slower onset curve, which is particularly so when it is consumed by traditional means (pipe, rolled with flower).
