The strong light used in most photos, the heavy editing done with them, and using a close-up camera lens all help create a photo of an average flower as being much bigger and greener than it actually is. That’s why checking other aspects besides just bright green color or size of nugs are needed to determine if the flower is worth your money. Here are some of those factors. There are many different ways to evaluate quality. Most people try one or two, but we recommend evaluating at least five to ten factors in unison: Smell, Color, Texture, Structure, Trichome count, Trim. While no single indicator of quality can say anything definitive regarding a flower; taken together they will provide a much clearer understanding on how well the flower was produced (grown), dried, stored and processed. ## **Start With the Smell** The first sign that new consumers will notice in purchasing fresh cannabis flower is the smell. While there are many different strains and terpene profiles for cannabis flowers, each generally has a distinct fragrance. Citrus, pine, fruits, fuels, dirt/earth, spices, and sweet scents all fit into some of the most common categories of fragrances found in cannabis flowers. While having an extremely pungent or odoriferous flower doesn’t necessarily indicate that the product contains extremely high levels of THC, it often suggests that much of the plant’s volatile compounds were maintained throughout the drying process. Conversely, if you find yourself smelling something very faintly, perhaps as dust (or) hay; it could potentially be indicative of either the products age or it was over-dried and/or under-cured. When evaluating floral fragrance and finding what appears to be an unusually strange smell from the cannabis flower being considered for purchase — regardless of your familiarity or experience — be more likely to question its potential quality issues, including those associated with possible contamination, poor storage conditions, and excessive moisture. ## **Colour: Green Is Only the Beginning** Many believe that flowers are most likely the brightest (or darkest) green possible and will have the highest quality. The fact is many different strains of marijuana grow into extremely high-quality flowers with all sorts of natural colors such as light green, dark green, olive color, purple, red pistils and even deeper color based on genetics and growth. More importantly than what color your marijuana appears to be is if the color looks healthy. Flowers that look like they’re very brown or grayed out may be old, been exposed too much oxygen for a long time, improperly stored, etc. A little bit of color is just fine and doesn’t always indicate poor quality; however, when buds appear dull, smell weak and feel dry, you should be concerned. ## **Check the Texture — Not Too Wet, Not Too Dry** Texture gives an indication of how likely a flower will hold its texture after being dried and stored. Flower which feels too dry to easily rub or crush (or too brittle) loses potential aroma and texture. On the other hand, if your buds are way overdry they tend to fall apart as soon as you pick them up. When this happens most of the aromatic properties have probably evaporated by then. Finally, it’s equally unadvisable for a bud to feel “wet”, or “soft” with excessive sponginess. In addition to creating storage issues excess moisture increases mold development risks. ## **Look at the Trichomes** Trichomes represent small, resin producing appendages found on the surface of cannabis flower buds. When lit properly, many times the trichome covering will make the bud look frosted or sparkly. Flowers that have an abundance of trichrome cover usually appear to be more resinous and have a texture as well. The calyces and smaller leaves near the center of the bud tend to be covered in an abundance of trichomes. You should never evaluate the quality of a product based solely upon how white and shiny a picture of it appears. Lighting can greatly enhance the visual appearance of trichomes and thus mislead consumers. In addition to being just one positive trait; trichomes offer no information regarding potency nor safety. ## **Trim Quality Matters** Trim refers to the amount of excess leaf material cut off from each flower after it’s harvested and dried. Most people who buy flower will want buds that look neat and tidy. They should have most of the flower in one piece, and as little extra leaf (called “shake”) on the outside as possible. You could use poorly trimmed flowers, however, they may give your customers less of what they pay for. If there’s too much shake, the taste may be different. Shake also makes products feel worse. And, you’ll likely get paid less because so many consumers don’t like shake. Stems can matter just as much, especially if the product is very light. However, even though some trim machines cut off a lot of extra stuff, this doesn’t always mean that the best flowers were made by those machines. High-quality and/or hand-processed flowers may keep their original form. It really depends on how good your flowers are. ## **Bud Structure Can Tell You Something Too** The genetic nature of cannabis plants will create flower bud types in many different ways. For example, one type of flower can be tight & solid and another can be light, long and loose. Dense bud does not inherently mean better than an airy bud. There are also certain strains of marijuana that grow with an airy, or loose bud form. Being loose doesn’t make the strain bad; you need to see if it looks clean and even. If your buds appear to be too tightly packed, damaged (or) full of dead stem or extremely broken down they were likely mishandled. Even small pieces aren’t always a concern, but when you pay premium prices for something you should get the best possible handling. ## **Watch Out for Seeds and Excess Stems** Having one seed in a few ounces doesn’t necessarily mean that all of your ounces are bad. The presence of many mature seeds could indicate stress when growing or lower quality. Also, seeds weigh. So, if you have seeds, they’re adding weight with no value compared to the useable flower that you paid for. You know this about stems. Cannabis buds always have stems. But there’s a difference between having a little stem on every bud, and having mostly stems. ## **Check for Signs of Mould** Check for any unusual growth such as white or gray web-like properties that look different than normal trichome development. Mold can also appear fluffy or powdery while healthy trichomes will tend to have a crystal like structure when closely inspected. The Smell of flower samples can also indicate the presence of mold. A musty, damp cellar type odor is very different from the earthy smells some strains naturally possess. If you are not sure by visual checking do not rely on the appearance alone because it does not guarantee there will be no microbial contamination in the flower sample ## **Does Strong Smell Mean Strong Potency?** It doesn’t have to. While a significant aroma might be an indicator of the number of terpenes present in a plant, smell will never directly indicate the amount of THC in that same plant. For example, one product may have a very aromatic appearance and contain relatively low levels of THC, while another product with much more potent levels of THC has no detectable aroma at all. Therefore, “It smells strongly therefore it is the strongest” isn’t a good way to determine strength. Smell is helpful when trying to determine if your herb or cannabis has been properly cured and what kind of herbal profile you’re getting from the bud, but determining how potent something is is a completely different matter. ## **Does More Orange Hair Mean Better Flower?** The orange, red, or brown hairs visible on cannabis are pistils. They are a normal part of the flower structure and can contribute to the appearance of a mature bud. However, a large number of orange hairs does not automatically mean higher THC or better quality. Different genetics naturally produce different amounts and colours of pistils. The same rule applies again: do not judge the entire product from one visual feature. ## **Packaging and Storage Matter More Than Many Buyers Think** Even a high-quality flower may degrade in quality when improperly stored. The loss of fragrance and degradation of the overall sensory experience can be caused by several factors including excessive heat, excessive light, excessive air exposure, and inappropriate moisture control. If available check how the flower was packaged. In general, packaging that provides protection for the flower from excess heat, light, and repeated air contact will be better than packaging with no barrier (loose) that causes the flower to rapidly dehydrate. In addition, the condition of the packaging may provide information as to whether the item was handled properly. Damage to seal(s), presence of condensation, and abnormal amount of crush materials should be noted prior to using the flower. ## **A Quick Quality Checklist** Before buying or using cannabis flower, ask yourself: - Does it have a clear, natural smell? - Does the colour look healthy rather than dull or grey? - Is the texture balanced rather than wet or powder-dry? - Can you see healthy trichome coverage? - Is the flower reasonably well trimmed? - Are there excessive leaves, stems, or seeds? - Does anything look fuzzy, mouldy, or unusual? - Does the packaging look properly sealed and stored? You do not need laboratory equipment to notice obvious quality differences.
