For those who have received something referred to as “zooot” in South London, or have been offered a “Bine,” and had little-to-no knowledge regarding the type of substance being referred to, then this article is intended to serve as a guide. ## **Cockney rhyming slang for marijuana: old school & new wave** London is the epicenter of Cannabis Slang. Londoners pull from Two historical traditions of language – the traditional cockney rhyming slang and the rapidly changing language of grime, drill, and South London street culture. Old school cockney contributes “bob hope,” which translates to dope. Some of the old-school crowd still use this as a form of nostalgia. New wave is “peng,” which originally meant to be very good. today, however, “peng” is primarily used as a term to describe excellent cannabis. When someone in East London tells you that the cannabis is “peng,” that is a serious recommendation. A “zooot” in london is defined as a joint. Regardless of your background, you’ll find that this definition is consistent throughout london. Therefore, whether rolling a zooot, lighting up a zooot, or asking if anyone has a zooot on hand to pass along to you – it will feel natural in london conversation. While “Munchies” is understood nationwide, Londoners have created layers of vocabulary to define smoking. Thus, “blowin’ a zooot” (the double-os are absolute when referencing specific neighborhoods in london) defines the act of smoking. Additionally, “linkin’ someone for a smoke,” or just plain ol’ “linkin’ the trap” when procuring is part of the process. ## **West midlands pragmatism: simple terms & no frills** In contrast to london, the midland region is often characterized as straight-forward. As such, Birmingham’s terms for marijuana-related activity tend to be less ornamental. While “Bifter,” referring to a joint, is commonly used in Birmingham and sometimes found further north; and while “solid” is specific to hash/resin, this is a term heard far less in london and yet still alive and well within brum’s older cannabis community. “draw” is likely the quintessential midlands term for cannabis itself – straightforward, unadorned, and does the job. Asking for “some draw” would make even the most casual Brummie chuckle with amusement. ## **Madchester and scally culture: rave-inspired cannabis terminology** Manchester gave us Madchester and the Haçienda, among other things. More importantly, manchester gave us our own unique style of cannabis related slang inspired by the city’s rave culture and working-class wit. In manchester, “Beak” can refer to cocaine — however context plays a significant role in determining the correct interpretation. On the other hand, “gear” serves as a catch-all for marijuana across Northern england as it is derived from the broader Northern slang for drugs in general. “stiffler” is another term for marijuana that is universally recognized across the north-west but seems to carry greater authority when used in Greater Manchester. Finally, “Hotboxing” is similarly recognized throughout the area but has a distinctively more deliberate tone when said by someone speaking with a Salford accent. As previously mentioned, northerners have a tendency to shorten nearly every word possible. Because of this, we get gems like “weed” becoming simply “weed.” With the deadpan delivery of flat, matter-of-fact Northern vowels — it sounds nothing like how a londoner pronounces it. ## **Straightforward: how Yorkshire speaks about weed** Yorkshire contributes to Cannabis Slang exactly what you would expect from a county whose residents view extraneous words as an insult. “reek” is an example where a word functions both as noun and verb to denote a strong smell, typically resulting from either cannabis or a person who has smoked recently. In addition to using the verb “reik,” you may also see “Bine,” another term for joints rolled tightly and thinly in the Northern tradition. Another example of using national vocabulary with regional flair is when saying “toke”.
